"The hardest part was the start line. I didn't think I was good enough. I felt like I was putting myself out there to fail spectacularly." Last night I heard Jenny Graham share these words.
Jenny Graham is a lovely local Invernessian lass who spent 124 days last year circumnavigating the globe on her bike. She did this unsupported - carrying all her own kit. She smashed the world record.
She cycled 18,000 miles across 4 continents. She cycled through the night, slept in drains and toilets, fixed her own mechanicals. To say she suffered would be a massive understatement.
But if you meet Jenny or hear her speak the first thing you'd probably notice is how relatable, grounded and funny she is. You'd also feel her passion for her sport and hear that she felt hugely privileged to be doing what she loved. This world record trip was for her, just an extension of what she was already doing.
Jenny has inspired me to push past the 'not good enoughs'. Most of us have self doubt, but it's in the doing, in the action, that we loose them.
I may fail specularly with my Pacific Crest Trail effort this year - but it doesn't really matter. I'm going to do something I love and I'll give it my best. And anytime I suffer, I'll know it's not a fraction of what Jenny suffered.
She's a normal person, I'm a normal person (some of my friends may disagree!!), so are you. We can all do extraordinary things!
PS, I had a wee sit on her bike, I'm sure it will give me super powers!! #jennygrahamis #herosinourmidst #circumnavigatetheglobe
