I always say that it’s hard to understand anxiety unless you’ve truly experienced it. It can be soul crushing. It’s like being trapped in a shell you can’t break free from. I’ve experienced anxiety in different waves of intensity the past decade.
From being diagnosed with stage one breast cancer when I was 25 and wondering if I would be alive (hi, I’m here 🙋🏼‍♀️) Surgeries (🏨)Treatments to preserve fertility (🧫🧪) Going through treatment (💉👩🏻‍🔬) Getting my masters in education while this all was happening (👩🏼‍🏫) Wondering if I would get the chance to have kids after this all (👦🏼👧🏼) More Surgeries (👎🏼) Oh, and teaching isn’t easy (🍎) My anxiety actually got worse as time went on... I don’t know if it all snowballed, but after one particularly tough year... I constantly felt like I couldn’t breathe. I started having panic attacks. Then, as silly as it sounds, my worst anxiety was anxiety about having anxiety. Constantly.

I hated this feeling and had to get it out of my life. So, one day I just started #running 🏃🏼‍♀️and I haven’t stopped

I believe in telling stories because I believe #werisebyliftingothers - I believe we can make each other better and build each other up instead of tear one another down (easy to fall into)

I also believe in the journey. No one can tell you what to expect, and there definitely isn’t anything that can prepare someone for this path. I’ve always disliked the term survivor because everyone wants to survive (duh). So, I would rather see myself rather a journeyer. I still have struggles but I’m finding ways to make them better and finding ways to help others. We forget that THE STRUGGLE IS REAL for so many of us! Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Now that the design has been revealed, I can share a special project that @mtm_206 and I have been working on to surprise his mom with to help show our love and support as she #beatsbreastcancer. It was so amazing to be able to create a custom design alongside Max.

Max and I brainstormed a long list of objects, verbs, and adjectives that described Jennifer Daily Mcpherson personality and the things she loves. With her recent move to the West Michigan lakeshore and being born in raised in the state of Michigan, it was an easy choice to draw up some ideas that combined these things. Scattered through her beach house, she has beautiful rocks and Petoskey stones that she finds along the shore. We just knew we wanted beach shores and Petoskey stones to be our inspiration for the design. 🌊 🏖
The word Petoskey is an English approximation of Bidasiga, which is a Native American Indian word that means ‘Rays of the Living Sun.’ With the light and energy Jenni always has and passes onto others, the stone represents her perfectly. She will continue to shine and with her army by her side! ☀️ We were under a tight deadline, having to come up with a design and have the shirts produced in a short amount of time to be able to give them to her as a surprise after her surgery. We did not want to stick to traditional breast cancer awareness designs and colors because Jenni is not like anyone else and we wanted the shirt to represent her light. We acted quick and sketched out different ways to visually represent a Petoskey stone and used it as the main texture and design of the shirt while being held together by the love of the Michigan mitten (even Max drew out ideas!). We knew we wanted the shirt to reflect beachy and positive vibe and loved the way it looked in shades of blue. 💙

In one of my past posts I briefly mentioned that pineapples are my “spirit fruit”. Is it weird that I identify with a fruit??? Absolutely!! I am kind of a weirdo lol. If you have been to my house you may have noticed my collection of random pineapples. I fell in love with them on my second anniversary in 2009 when @efirestone and I took a trip to Newport, RI. I loved how it meant hospitality and all are welcome. I consider myself to be very welcoming of all types of people and try my hardest not to place judgement on others. This is my #nurse Kervens and she has taken care of me every week since November 13th. •
She came by today because we didn’t have the heart to discharge me last week. “One more check and then you text me whenever you want.”

Kervens dealt with my crude humor, my sarcastic replies to any treatment and let me ask ridiculous questions. She often stayed way past her time to reassure me everything I was thinking was OK and I wasn’t losing my mind.

Only Kervens and my husband have seen my double mastectomy and while I joke about my “robo tits” Kervens rubbed my back when I cried the first week promising me it will be beautiful and better.

Something about a nurse reassuring a patient makes the world feel safe and ok. Right? It takes a special person to be a Nurse- they often think of you off the clock and treat you like their very own.

Day 20 of chemo: First pic was the 10th Jan pre chemo, second pic was today.. The hair loss since Friday last week has been rapid and shocking to be honest. You know it’s coming but never really expect it at the same time. Drastic changes today, also a wig fitting. There are other charities in New Zealand who are dedicated to supporting women (and men) with Breast Cancer. If you are organising an event, please consider donating even a portion of the funds raised to one of these deserving charities. If you are planning on donating, may I encourage you to support the smaller guys. These amazing organisations do not get any where near the publicity they deserve. If you want to part with your hard earned money and know that it is DIRECTLY supporting people with breast cancer in this country then you owe it to yourself to look at the work these charities do.
Please know I am in no way minimising the work of the national breast cancer organisation. All I am trying to do is be a voice, raise awareness and educate you that there are other charities in NZ who work have a huge impact on people with breast cancer who would seriously benefit from these funds.
Secondly, I have been on the receiving end of so much kindness, love and support these past three years. I am a passionate, aspiring speaker who would love the opportunity to speak at your upcoming event. I am based in Christchurch so that is easier, in saying that, I am already booked to fly to Palmerston North to speak on the 19th May at an event.

If you ask people how they would define beauty, most would cite in some way that real beauty comes from within. We mean it when we say it, and when we know someone well enough to see it. Still, when we look into the mirror each day, how many of us notice the bags under our eyes, and rather than curse them, acknowledge that we are lucky to be alive and that real beauty comes from within.

Unfortunately, we live in a world of constant judgement, forcing us to sometimes wear our first impressions on the outside. Flawless faces surround us on magazines, billboards, and screens. Cosmetic and surgical procedures can turn a frog into a prince these days, and we have social media to prove it. We are constantly barraged with opportunities to compare ourselves to people all over the world.  The ones who are apt to show face are seemingly, uncannily, very attractive. So, how many of us are truly so enlightened as to habitually look beneath the surface and fully accept ourselves and others, flaws and all?

NYFW offers quite a playground for the fashion forward and fabulous, photographers snapping away at picture perfect people, runways dressed in flawless skin as much as fabrics and furs. It is a perfect time to forget that it’s the inner beauty that counts.
.
Designer @daynadono , though, with a fashion event like no other, dared to remind us, and also to show us that scars can certainly be quite attractive. On a runway walked by only stage four breast cancer survivors, “flaws” were of the highest fashion, and their owners were proud!
.
It was a day in the lives of many women that they likely did not concern themselves a bit about bags or bulges, as those of us who had, cheered them on for their courage, their strength, and their willingness to walk on with such pride. They reminded us all that day that it is a luxury to worry about such things.
