I can't even imagine what it's like to grow up in a small mountain village, without electricity, tv, or internet. It seemed like a romantic, idyllic childhood to me at first.
However, most villages don't have schools so children are sent away during the week to study where possible, coming home only for the weekend. If the kids are lucky, have parents who own a motorbike and live in a village with a road, they might get a ride - otherwise they walk.
One night a couple of village women helped prepare a dinner for us. As we found out later on, it was on the expense of their own children who'd normally go hungry on nights like these - tourists are a priority. Nobody seemed phased by it. Fortunately our guide cooked up a feast to share with the whole village, and the kids would eat as well.
But the kids looked happy and healthy and are playful. Parents didn't fret over them, leaving then mostly to their own devices, and as it seems it's all working out just fine. Still I'm not sure I'd trade. :) #travelling
