🛑Before you cast a glare at the rider that beat you-
1. Check yourself. There is no room for poor sportsmanship in this sport.🙅🏻♀️
2. Did you put in the work? ⚠️
For riders that do not show year round-this is for you❗️
Often times we fall into a pattern of laziness in our “off season”. When in reality this time is the perfect opportunity to get ahead! 👍🏻
Before you come up with an excuse not to ride or even simply do groundwork, I want you to think about your goals for next season. How obtainable will they be if you wait until last minute to start practicing? 🤷🏻♀️
Here are some of my favorite “off season” exercises, aside from normal riding sessions👇🏻
🏇🏻Bareback- Riding bareback is wonderful for practicing balance and helps strengthen your core and legs.
🏇🏻Showmanship- Too cold to ride? Get out in the arena in hand. Practice your straight lines, your pivots, your squares, your posture, your stops! You stay warm when you keep moving, and your horse is not likely to work up a sweat.
🏇🏻Lunging with ground poles- It’s important to maintain our horses muscle over the winter, especially if we plan on bouncing right into show season in the Spring. The more conditioning we can do with our horses now (within reasonable temperatures) the more fair to them when we’re back to competing.
🏇🏻Stretches- People and horses alike, if we stretch daily, it allows us more flexibility with less of a chance for injury. Learn ways to properly stretch your horse, and spend a little time each day stretching yourself.
A little bit each day goes a long way! Every time you work with your horse, remember, you are steps ahead of the rider that “just didn’t feel like it” 👣
You’ll thank yourself when the season is in full swing. 😉
What are your goals for next show season and what will you do to get ahead of the game during off season? 👇🏻
