The count down til Spring begins so if you’re considering building or upgrading an existing garden bed, consider the following:
1. Soil type.
2. PH levels in the soil. Some plants, like Rhododendrons and Azaleas like soil that is slightly more acidic. If you are unsure, you can order a soil tester from Amazon and test your soil.
3. Location in yard. Some plants thrive in full on sun while other plants prefer more shade. Pay attention to which area of your yard gets more sun vs shade and plan your garden accordingly before purchasing plants.
4. Companion planting. Group plants according to their water, soil and climate preference (full sun, full shade or partial shade).
5. Consider colour and texture because that will determine the look and mood of your outdoor space.
This garden bed (as shown in this photo) was completely renovated in the middle of July 2018. It lays directly over bedrock, so it’s taken time to research the right type of plants that can thrive in rock gardens and that like partial shade. Come spring, this garden bed will be filled out with more hardy plants. .
