This was definitely one of the biggest, brightest highlights of my trip and not to mention one of the most moving experiences of my life.
By far the best one I have visited, the Australia War Memorial tells many tales of sacrifice, grief and pride with such grace and pathos that ur heart is full by the time you exit through those beautiful lion flanked doors. .
I am a humanitarian aid worker by profession. In no way am I a supporter of wars. I don't understand them or the point of them or the awe that people have about them. And while I hold the armed forces of every nation in very high regards but I have no fascination towards them. No disrespect, really...just wired that way, I guess! I surely wouldn't have visited if my friend @siddhartha23 didn't insist on it. I just happen to really like him and chose to trust his judgement. Man, am I happy I did! One of the best places I have visited- EVER! The facts, the anecdotes, the presentation, the symbolism, the anthropological value of the wars... it just blew me away. It really helps to understand the ethos of Australia as a nation and its people. It tells the story of a million beautiful humans who served as fully committed soldiers in someone else's war and those who stayed behind waiting for them. "A war for peace" is what they said. They dreamt and hoped for sanity after the insanity. For peace after the chaos and for light and joy after the dark sad times. .
I went there thinking that I had an hour to spare before my city tour and literally spent the entire day there, leaving only to go back to my hotel in the evening. I was moved to tears and that doesn't happen often. What a soulful, beautiful place!! Thanks Sid! I owe u one.
PS: I do not mean any disrespect to those who serve the armed forces. They are amazing, brave beautiful souls and we the civilians are forever grateful to them. When I say that I don't understand the fascination, that is purely to stress how much this experience moved me. Hope I didn't offend anyone!
