Interesting study, the only one I know of that has compared postexercise effects whey protein, meat, or poultry on body comp and strength.
All three protein treatments significantly improved body composition (both lean mass gain and fat loss) compared to the maltodextrin control (all doses were 46 g). The control group had body comp improvements as well, but not to a significant degree. Maximal strength improved similarly in all treatments as well as the control.
Ultimately, none of these high-quality protein sources stood out as special compared to the others, but they all beat carbohydrate for improving body comp. Note: total daily protein intake was higher in the protein-supped conditions than the maltodextrin-supped control condition.
In a sense, it’s anticlimactic to not find a particular protein source emerge as superior. On the bright side, these results empower practitioners and athletes who value flexibility of choices to get the job done.
