Each garment that I designed for Issue No. 02 - The Love Issue, was inspired by the stories of the women in the magazine. This particular garment is based on Sandra's Story, a Transgender model. She spoke about her transition from a man into this beautiful strong woman she is today. She fought to be the person she believed she was and always felt. Imagine feeling like you're born in the wrong body, and not being able to connect with what is looking back at you in the mirror. She fought against what society forced onto her, and slowly made her way to who she always knew she was, a woman. Her story is heartbreaking, brave, goosebump inducing and one that is filled with warmth and love, inspite of all the struggles and hurricanes that came her way. //
This top is inspired by her and her love for life, to be who she knew she was! We have used different colours of fabrics that are cut into boxes, these boxes symbolise the way society wants us to box and label ourselves and every aspect of our life, it stands for how when you're born in a body you don't relate to you feel trapped in a box with a sense of helplessness and confusion. //
These fabric boxes have unfinished edges, symbolising how even when you feel trapped, there is always a way out - all you need to do is believe and fight through these made up lines and socially accepted expectations we box ourselves in. The fabrics used are colourful and each different from the another, trying to emphasise the idea that we are all different and we should together work on creating a space that is inclusive, open, safe and accepting to one anothers differences. //
We chose white as the colour of the top, because a white object reflects all colors equally, without discrimination or prejudice. Also, colours reflect off of it, creating their own path, just like we pave our own path in life in very individualistic ways.
