#shabbatshalomfrom Mexico! I’m in Cabo San Lucas for the weekend for a friends wedding, but here’s a picture of Templo Rodfe Tzedek in Mexico City. Once the main synagogue in the city, it now serves as a museum and archive center containing tens of thousands of documents on Jewish History in Mexico. .

There is so much speculation about Frida Kahlo’s German-Jewish ancestry, but did you know that her partner, famed Mexican muralist identified his Jewish roots as the primary motivation for his work?
He is quoted saying, “My father told me that my [great] grandfather used to be an Italian Jew…. [the name] Rivera is from Italy – the real name was Rivera Sforza [and] all the people in Italy who have this name are Jewish…. On the other hand, I remember much more about my grandmother – my grandmother was a Portuguese Jewess by the name of Inez D’Acosta.” He later went on to publicly announce that, “My Jewishness is the dominant element in my life. From this has come my sympathy with the downtrodden masses which motivates all my work.” Like other countries in the Americas, much of Mexico’s Jewish history is rooted in the Spanish Inquisition. In the 1500s “converso” Jews, or Jews who had been forcibly converted to Catholicism began arriving in Mexico from Spain. Some continued practicing Judaism in secret, becoming what is frequently referred to as Crypto-Jews. In recent years there has been an emergence of Crypto-Jews openly exploring and reclaiming their Jewish heritage in Mexico and beyond. The current Jewish population in Mexico also consists of those who have descended from immigrants from the 19th and early 20th centuries with nationwide totals estimated between 40,000 and 50,000.

#shabbatshalomfrom Mexico City! Pictured is the beautiful Sinagoga Nidje Israel in the historic center of Mexico City. It was built by Eastern European immigrants in 1941 and functioned until the 1970s when the community moved away to different parts of the city. The synagogue was restored 10 years ago and is now open as a museum, as well as occasionally being used for bar mitzvah’s and weddings.

For those asking... I never met my dad. So I’m not sure how that side traces back in the family tree. No one has ever reached out. But on my mom side of her family tree we have a long lineage that ties to Spanish Jews that’s where the main family name comes from (not mine but Rey) to a long foundational story of how El Paso grew by a group of Mormons passing through on a mission to Mexico and some settled and stayed in #ElPasoTx some converted back and forth, went and relocated Mormon group to that one place some of you may be familiar here in El Paso for its previously known polygamist Mormon community. I was raised hardcore catholic and through my early childhood travels I actually was lucky enough to experience for months at a time various variations of Christian values from orthodox, Methodist to some random almost party like ones in smaller communities lol. I’m a horrible mashup of things and backgrounds but that makes me who I am and I appreciate it. What is your mashup? Everyone has a weird or interesting story to tell even just from their family tree. Share it id love to hear it!

Found this treasure of a restaurant for breakfast today in Mexico City, KLIEN’S Jewish Deli, just down the neighborhood synagogue. Walked past it several times before and never noticed. Their traditional Mexican kosher food was to die for. I had the Chilaquiles con Mole y Pollo even tried their Salami as a side dish. The Mexico few people know.

On Thursday morning, I was able to meet and connect with one of the leaders of the Jewish community of Mexico City: Solomon. Although apprehensive to open up, Solomon shared about the current state of this community in a country of 123 million people. With a population of about 50,000, most Jews in Mexico reside in the Mexico City area with a heavy concentration in the Polanco and Condesa neighborhoods. The community established itself in the late 19th Century and they were (and continue to be) organized into 4 sub-communities based on their origins: Damascene, Aleppine, Turkish, and European.
It’s estimated that Mexico is home to well over 40,000 Jews. GUT YONTEF, amigos. #cincodemayo #mexico #mexicanjews #shabbatshalom #gutshabbes

The Eisenman Holocaust Memorial is a massive part of Jewish history. Each one symbolizes each life lost, that is so awful. My husband considers himself a Mexican Jew, because he was born in Mexico. But his blood is actually Russian, Greek Turkish. When Mauricio's grandparents fled Europe, they ended up going to Mexico. It was so important to my husband that I convert to Judaism, because so many Jews were lost. Our children are Jewish and walking through here, and being reminded of the loss and the sadness, it is very overwhelming! #kylerichards #mauricioumansky #rhobh #berlin #eisenmanholocaustmemorial #theagencyre #holocaust #holocaustsurvivor # neverforget #sixmillion #russianjews #mexicanjews #turkishjew #greekjew
