I first discovered Cabal at the tender age of eleven years old. I don't quite recall where I found it but suffice to say, it changed the life of an impressionable youth forever.
Up to that point, I had already developed an insatiable love for horror movies, with some of my favourites being The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street and The Omen. All classic examples of the genre and dark enough to whet the appetite of a mind already preoccupied with a lust for the dark.
Cabal was the first horror novel I had ever read, purely by accident, as I had no real idea of what the story was about or who Clive Barker was at that stage. It was the start of a great conflagration in my life that still burns with the same intensity.
I've since read everything that Clive Barker has ever released but Cabal holds a special place in my heart as it introduced me to so much. 😀
The story of Boone and Lori is essentially a love story but as is typical for a book from the mind of Barker, it's mixed in with a very healthy dose of extreme violence, flaying, monsters, hatred and of course, the fantastically perverse and sadistic Decker. One particualar scene that stands out for me was when Lori masturbates on the bed thinking of Boone. At eleven years old, I didn't even know this was possible!
Cabal was later turned into a movie called Night Breed, which was both a critical and financial dissapointment. Although it doesn't compare with the book, it's still an excellent movie in its' own right and well worth the time of anyone curious enough to check it out, even if it's just to see David Cronenberg play the part of Decker. 😱
At last, the night has a hero........
