In some ways, this serves me well! It means that when I do something, I go all in and absolutely give it my all because I most definitely want a job well done.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But in some ways, my perfectionistic tendencies hold me back because I'm afraid what I do won't be good enough. I don't want to let others down!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It's taken me years (way too many years) to learn that we need to focus a little more on the process. It's the process where we experience the most growth. It's those little steps that lead to the greatest success.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You have goals. They can't be reached overnight. So take pride in all those little steps. The extra veggies you've incorporated into your meals even if your nutrition isn't where you want it to be YET. The 5k you covered last week even if you needed to do walk/run intervals when all you want to be able to do is run the entire distance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3 Tips That Are Proven To Get You To Your First “Real” Pull Up...

First things first, let me state that it’s not going to be easy, but with hard work it’s completely possible. To be honest, pull ups and chin ups are my nemesis!!! I feel pretty strong at most movements in the gym, but when it comes to pulling myself up over a bar I struggle. I don’t struggle as much as I used to because I have continued to work on them....

I feel like a common goals around women who come into my studio or train with me online is “to be able to do a pull up”. I get stoked when people say this because first of all - setting performance goals I enjoy much better than “weight loss” goals. These are the goals that will help keep you focused (even though you will be losing weight while working towards this goal)....I have witnessed many many clients achieve their goals of doing “real” pull ups over the years & it’s honestly the best!!!

Here are 3 Tips to get you to your first real pull up:
1. Focus on heavy strength training to build overall upper body strength. Don’t be afraid to lift heavy and lift often (2-3 times per week)

2. Don’t forget your core! Perform core stabilization and an isolated exercises also. Surprisingly core strength is very important in keep your body from swinging during a pull up and will also assist in getting your head up over that bar.

3. Use eccentric training (negatives). I am demonstrating this in the 3rd exercises of the above video. Use your muscles to slowly lower your body down and not on the way up (I jump up). Learning how to control your body weight while hanging from the bar will help you build up the strength required in a pull up.

BONUS - last tip - do pull ups often!! Whether you are performing band assisted or regular pull ups/chin ups - keep practicing!! In my own experiment I have found that consistency is a major key when it comes to being able to either do one or do multiple pull ups.
