I’m holding a flexor digitorum forum! Here’s a way to strengthen the muscles of the feet using your yoga/pilates/exercise mat.

I call this the “Potato Sack Toe Strengthener” because holding one’s mat at roughly hip level looks vaguely like someone getting ready to hop to the finish line in a potato sack race (when viewed from the front, which is not shown here).
.
Essentially, I’m trying to tear my mat in half by maintaining a constant pulling action with my hands and a pushing action with my toes. Therefore, this engages the shoulders a bit, too, albeit rather mildly. Traditional yoga has far more pushing movements than pulling, so integrate the latter wherever you can!

Should you experience foot cramps, something to which I am occasionally prone, you can tell your foot muscles and fascia who’s boss by rolling them out with @tuneupfitness balls or similar soft tissue conditioning tools. Your feet are your foundation, so keep them rocking and rolling!

If we don’t “correct” movement, how do we improve it? What if it IS dysfunctional, “crooked”, unbalanced?

We view movement through a lens of the nervous system. Movement too crooked, stiff, unbalanced, etc. is NOT a problem we can solve by “correcting” symptoms. Traditionally in both horse and human movement, the problems we SEE are the problems we WORK on. Get that “weaker” leg stronger. Get that “tighter” side more supple. Today we know — unless it is a new/acute injury — the problem we SEE nearly always comes from somewhere else.
Find STABILITY issue in one joint, and you find a MOBILITY issue in one or more surrounding joints. But where does it stop? The body is a chain of connections, and by the time we see a problem in the jaw or hind foot, where did it begin? And even if we knew how it started, the original problem is long healed. We often will NEVER know the origin.

You already know our top 3 answers to movement “struggles”:
.
1. 🧠Make the nervous system happy. Give it rich proprioceptive and environmental data so it can make better choices, and free up resources. A brain confident in the body’s joint integrity is a brain more willing to release braces, pain, excess tension, “weakness” and other protections. But it can’t /won’t until it has good data! Movement data can come ONLY from ACTIVE, SELF-organized movements, especially in the fullest ranges of motion (within normal limits... not talking “hyper”). More variations and novelty = more data. This is one reason we love the mat: it turns standing OR moving into a far richer proprioceptive experience. But *touch* can start the process.
.
2. Teach an “agility position”. This IS a “building block” we teach: ability to reclaim a stable spine / posture AND lower and shift back COM, elevating base of cervical spine. For a human, it’s an athletic “ready position”. For a horse it’s lowering haunches.
.
3. Use the environment to design authentic, reflexive movement challenges to help the brain explore limits of its current compensations. (You know we love slopes and obstacles).

But none of it works if we use *force* or manipulation. Brains need to know what the body can do *without* our cues.

If your sport or activity requires you to move in multi planes of motion; cuts & turns & twists, it is highly recommended that you work on lateral movement drills and exercises. 🙌🏻

How many of you can run fast in a straight line but when it comes to cutting in & out, and turning & twisting, you suddenly feel like your body just can't keep up. It is very important to learn to decelerate; to stop a movement and restart another. Only by working on these types of drills & exercises, we are able to improve our agility/ lateral speed. 🏃🏻

Working on lateral plyometrics also improves your overall balance, coordination & lower limb proprioception, meaning you're less likely to get injured, like rolling your ankle or straining the knee when you suddenly make a change of direction.

Coming up with control is paramount to nailing inversions, coming down with equal control is the icing on the cake👌
Throwing yourself up without control makes the outcome less predictable and thus increases the likelihood of falling over. With practice, you find the sweet spot of how to come up as slowly as possible:) Coming down slowly requires starting the process when you still have the energy and a light landing is brilliant - but the pull of gravity and the desire to be firmly on the floor again work against you. Try as I might, I can only hold this on the way up for now😅

Do you train balance? If not, you should! Here's why: Having good dynamic balance can help improve your coordination and ability to react to sudden changes of direction, both of which can help reduce the risk of an accidental fall. Controlling dynamic balance should be a reflexive response that happens automatically. If you feel that you don’t have good balance, it is extremely important that you do the work necessary to improve it. Don't have pillars? Try a bosu ball or a swiss ball for nice challenge of your balance! ☀️

Here’s some of my favorite basic movements when it comes to ankle health and mobility. 👟
1️⃣Elevated Heel Drops

Why do I like these so much? 🤔
You can do these pretty much anywhere. Practicing these movements can increase awareness of how the big toe, foot, and ankle all work together. Doing these standing also allows you to focus on creating stability not just through the foot and lower leg, but all the way up to hips and core. Learning to create strength from the ground up. 💪🏼 I’m the weirdo you’ll find doing these out in public while standing around or waiting in lines. 🙈
*Generally I would recommend trying these with no shoes and something more sturdy than a yoga block to stand on.👍🏼

I enjoyed first teaching this exercise to children and moved it into teaching it to adults too!

Multipurpose breakfast.

There's a lot of conditioning going on while he's eating his breakfast! His rear are up on a slightly unstable surface. His front is on another, more unstable surface. His core is working to stabilize him and he was getting some good stretching in there as well when he reached forward. Under the pillow is his food is on a third unstable surface, and he has to shift his weight around slightly to get the food.
The breakfast is in a toy where he has to lick away the food. So it's both conditioning, enriching, proprioception strengthening and calming. He also wasn't allowed to see when I placed his food there, so he had to use his little nose to find it. Also a lot of confidence going on there, as he's completely blinded for the word when he's eating (bonus for proprioception and balance!) I just love this lazy way of dog training! 😁😇

Yesterday I talked about the part of our Sensory System called "Proprioception", our pressure sense that helps with many things 💕💖💕
.
Here are some activities that help develop this sense... and also calm our body in the process:
.
-Weight Bearing: traditional exercise like push ups, yoga, pilates and anything that makes your work your muscles, rock climbing, wall, & hiking =) .
-“Heavy Work”: pushing or pulling heavy things or working against resistance. Push the wall, push a laundry basket with detergent in it down the hall
.
-Joint Activation: compression (joint pushes together) and traction (joint pulls apart), either actively or passively, hanging from monkey bars, animal or wheelbarrow walks, also yoga, running
.
-Skin activation: Swaddling, and expanding on this idea for older children can include fun games where you make human "sandwiches” with couch cushions, weighted blankets & vests (10% body weight ideal), stretchy & compression clothing, lycra suspended equipment activities, "brushing" the skin
.
-Connective Tissues/Fascia: Gliding of underlying connective tissue over foam rollers, balls with material that grip your skin, doing movements that break you out of your typical movement patterns, all involve activating our connective tissue, a.k.a. fascia. Fascial gliding is becoming more popular as a topic involved in therapy. Not just for orthopedic patients and pain, but for sensory integration! Stay tuned for more posts on that! .
Pro Tip: Lighten up and HAVE FUN, 🤩 that is where the beauty of neuroplasticity, growth and integration occurs.

Note: There is some overlap in several areas, but the MORE OVERLAP THE BETTER! All activities should be age appropriate and ENGAGING - It has to be fun or much of the therapeutic value is lost. After all, do YOU want to do something that you find to be boring, stupid or un motivating? Didn’t think so. Neither do our kids. Desert Dance: •
The drive in ‘itchy’ (our mobile home/van) from Jilotepec (near Mexico City) to Xilitla, took about 8 hours the other day. Yup! 😱

A series of endless switchbacks and sharp curves had Beni thrown across the back of the van too often than not, or had our things momentously thrown onto him.
An obvious but important TIP: if doing this or a similar drive: secure all your stuff down... hard!
It was a continuous winding snake from desert dusted mountains to the lush jungle like forests of Xilitla (yes Mexico has beautiful green landscapes).

The people who know me can testify to how much I dislike sitting for long periods of time. Not only does it make me tired but it also makes my body ache like an old woman... •
So I stopped half way to stretch out my hips and body and reactivate my mind.
This sequence focuses on improving coordination, proprioception and balance aspects of mobility and flow. •
Hope you enjoy the view as much as I did.
Now time to get ready for another day of driving from Xilitla to Guadalcazar! Woohoo! Venga Itchy!

4cm shortfall on a balance reach test? You may be 2.5 to 4x more likely to experience a lower body injury.⁣

With athletic movement being a constant interplay between balance and imbalance, some believe that balance is the single most important component for achieving athletic ability (Gray et al, 1995).⁣

So why are we not measuring this skill dynamically?⁣

Dynamic balance tests began being developed in the early 2000s, but a landmark study published in 2006 demonstrated that when competitive basketball players scored a preseason reach distance difference >4cm between legs - they were 2.5x more likely to experience a lower body injury during their competitive season (Plisky et al, 2006).⁣

A study in 2011 repeated the same experiment in professional soccer players, this time those with a preseason >4cm reach difference were 4x more likely to experience a lower body injury during their season (Gonell et al, 2011).⁣

With dynamic balance ability being so predictive of injury - balance training needs to reflect this and be dynamic in nature.⁣

Start with airplanes on the ground, then progress it onto foam - not only is it dynamic, but it gets those glutes firing at the same time. Once aced, move on to single leg standing reaches on foam to really work on that dynamic reach.⁣

4cm seems small doesn't it? But keep working on it - it'll save you a lot of grief in the end.⁣

🌱🙊😂 I was trying some proprioceptive training with a balance ball and squats the other day (which in principal is a really nice exercise) ... .
BUT I had no idea, I was doing them SOO sloppily 😂 ... at least didn’t feel so from my own perspective, I swear ... = proprioception total fail 🙈 ... good there’s cameras nowadays to replace proprioception 😂, especially when you’re training pal @yogafini has a cold ... or so she says 🤥 :). Get better soon!! .
