A verse from “Adio Kerida”, a beautiful Sephardic love song in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish). Most Spanish speakers will understand this just fine but notice a few small differences in pronunciation here and there. I love this song and found myself playing it tonight and wanted to share a little of it with you all. “Cuando tu madre te pario
Y te kito al mundo
Coracon ella no te dio
Para amar segundo...
Adio,
Adio kerida,
No kero la vida,
Me l’amagrates tu.” “When your mother delivered you and brought you to the world, she did not give you a heart with which to love another.
Goodbye,
goodbye beloved,
I don’t want to live the life that you have ruined.” #adiokerida #ladino #sephardim #judeospanish #lovesongs

~ "Every spring, Jews around the world celebrate the holiday of Purim, which commemorates the victory of the Jewish queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai over the wicked Haman, who attempted to annihilate the Jews of the Persian Empire. As written in the biblical scroll (megillah) of Esther, after Haman is stopped, the Jews rest and rejoice: “Komo los dias ke olgaron en eyos los djudios de sus enemigos i el mez ke fue boltado a eyos de ansya a alegriya i de limunyo a dia bueno, para azer a eyos dias de kombite i alegria, i enbiamiento de prezentes kada uno a su kompanyero, i dadivas a los dezeozos.” “The days wherein the Jews had relief from their enemies, and the month which was turned for them from one of sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day: that they should observe them as days of feasting and joy, and for sending gifts to one another and offerings to those in need” (Esther 9:22). Jewish customs on Purim include listening to the reading of the megillah, eating signature foods, giving charity and gifts to friends, drinking, and making rowdy noise during the reading to blot out the name of Haman (traditionally pronounced Aman among the Sepharadim). We know about some of the traditions and customs of Sephardic Jews in Seattle through items in our collection and personal recollections from first-generation Seattle Sephardim whose families came to the United States from the Ottoman Empire—today’s Turkey and Rhodes—during the early twentieth century." "Although it is rare today to find someone who knows how to sing the Judeo-Spanish songs, through the Sephardic Studies Library we have been able to preserve numerous songbooks containing Koplas de Purim. That’s how we know the differences in customs between Sephardic Jews in Istanbul and those in Italy. Here is one you might enjoy singing this year.

Empesar kero kontar

First stanza:

Empesar kero kontar echas del Dio Alto,
De lo ke kero enmentar nada yo no falto,
Kon bayles i saltos i kon gran plazer,
Porke Aman el mamzer,
Mos kijo matarmos
tambien atemarmos.
To start I wish to recount deeds of the Almighty G-d,
From what I wish to describe, nothing will be left out,
With dancing and jumping and with great pleasure,
Because Aman the bastard [illegitimate one]
He wanted to kill us
And also to terrify us.

Second stanza:

Oyed lo ke akontesyo en tiempo avante,
De lo ke se rekresio es koza de enkante,
Kon un rey djigante el Ahashverosh,
Kantare kon grande boz,
I kon alegria esta maravia.
Listen to what occurred in the times of old
And what transpired was something amazing.
It deals with a great king Ahashverosh
I will sing loudly about this miracle." Learn more in "Dancing and jumping or laughing and singing? ~ "The Sephardic Studies Digital Library also has several copies of 'Sefer Alegria de Purim,' published in Livorno in 1902 by the well-known printing house established in the nineteenth century by Solomon Belforte (1806-1869). That such a book was published in Italy demonstrates that cultural links tied together Sephardic Jews in Italy and the Ottoman Empire during the early twentieth century. Rabbi Solomon Maimon of Congregation Sephardic Bikur Holim donated one copy of Sefer Alegria de Purim whereas another comes from the library of the late Sam Bension Maimon." ~ "For the families who provide their archival materials for the Digital Library, the process can be just as revelatory. Robin Agoado Roberts, one of Leon Behar’s granddaughters, says that her grandfather never discussed his army years with his family in Seattle. “I had no idea he was into politics. Now, thanks to Oscar, I’m learning more and more about him.” She remembers Leon Behar as a storyteller with a playful personality, a big heart, and a great imagination: “He always had a little piece of paper to jot down poems; he would sit at the counter of his store and write. He mostly wrote in English, but sometimes he wrote in Ladino too.”' Learn more in "A Soldier's Ladino Poems of Ottoman-Jewish Pride" by Dr. Hannah Pressman ~ http://bit.ly/1zHeMiy ~ [Featured image: The Behar family in Seattle, 1954. Swipe➡️-Nissim Tawil a’h was a heroic Syrian Jewish businessman in Japan during the war years. "In 1939, I was called by the Japanese government foreign office. I was shivering, scared to death. They say, ‘being a leader in the Jewish community, we think you can help us. There are a group of Jewish people in Russia, all with beards and payis. Would you sign for them? Or else they’re going to send them back to Germany and Poland to be killed.’ I told them I would sign the guarantee. They want to come to Japan from Russia, but the Japanese consulate is being bothered every day and night begging him to come to Japan. ‘Would you guarantee them?’ Back and forth, when I told them yes and I am ready to sign the paper, they tell me, ‘Now, we understand that you are very unreliable.’
‘Why am I unreliable?’’Because you are willing to sign without knowing who they are, what they are. And how can you take such a responsibility to sign such a paper?’ I told them ‘Let us change seats. Suppose I’m a Japanese and you are telling me some people on the border of Russia are coming here, would I allow them- would I sign for them? Or else you’re going to send them back to Germany and Poland to be killed. Would you sign or not?’ They said, ‘Of course we’ll sign.’
Then again, at this point they started yelling. ‘How can you sign the paper without know what kind of people they are! These people are spies!’ I told them I would sign. I guaranteed them. And finally I convinced them and I signed the papers, and they came. There must have been about 6 or 7 groups came that passed through Japan. I think that it was a big mitzvah, to save lives." Rabbi Kalmanowitz was one of the rabbis saved by Nissim Tawil. He eventually founded Mirrer Yeshivah. In 1940, Rabbi Kalmanowitz joined forces with Isaac Shalom a’h raising funds to rescue European Jews. In the 1950’s Rabbi Kalmanowitz, hearing the plight of Egypt’s Jews and knowing that the Egyptian young boys had no future in Arab lands, he succesfully lobbied the White House and Govt officials. He helped rescue dozens of Jewish boys and provided them with studies, lodging and food until years later they were able to rejoin with their families.
~ "Ottoman and Turkish Jewish religious composers are generally only known or studied within the Istanbul Jewish community, because they only composed Hebrew language pieces and performed exclusively in the synagogue.  As in the case of Hayim Bejerano, the first Chief Rabbi of the Turkish Republic and a composer himself, such musicians were hardly isolated within an ethno-religious practice or sphere, but in fact lived at the center of – and were central to – a far-reaching Ottoman and Turkish music world." ~ “To many, Yiddish means Jewish,” said Devin Naar, professor of history, Jewish Studies and Sephardic Studies at the University of Washington. “When Jews from the Ottoman Empire started coming to the U.S., they discovered that category of ‘Jewish’ was already taken by people who had a very different understanding and expression of what it means to be Jewish.”
German and Eastern European Jews, Naar said, looked down on Ladino-speaking Jews. “There was a sense of condescension, including towards the Spanish language.” People would ask Ladino-speaking immigrants: “How could you be Jewish if you don't know Yiddish? How could you be Jewish if you don't eat matzah balls? How could you have a name in Greek and be Jewish?" - Sephardic Studies Program chair Devin E.S. When the memorial is rededicated, the inscription should acknowledge the truth, however hard it may be to do so, of who was really responsible for the cemetery’s destruction. Perhaps only with such an act of courage and truth will the city, once known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans,” be able to own its history, and the Jews buried beneath its university begin to rest in peace." - Sephardic Studies chair Dr. Devin Naar via @jewishreviewbooks ~ https://bit.ly/2XilICq ~ #Sephardim #Thessaloniki #Jewish #Greece #Sephardic #DevinNaar #JewishHistory #Salonica #JewishStudies

Fasoolya most often describes a stew of green beans in a tomato base, altho in some cultures in the Mid East white beans are used. The dish can be made with or without meat, beef or lamb most often used. For awhile now, I've been making the more Turkish version of fasoolya, green beans long-cooked with lots of onions, fresh tomato and dill. It's a wonderful dish, but I have been craving my father's fasoolya.

For my father, son of Sephardic Jewish immigrants from the Ottoman Empire, fasoolya was a simple, flavorful soup of green beans and chickpeas in a clear broth made with beef bones and tomato paste with lots of onions, paprika and some garlic. (The garlic may have been his addition since it's not normally used in Turkish fasoolya, but rarely left out of any dish he made.) As kids we sometimes added rice to our bowls, making a nearly complete and totally delicious meal.
Lately I have been working on a vegetarian version that captures the tam (flavor) I remember. This week I came close to success with the addition of canned tomatoes with their liquid. It's not exactly my Poppi's fasoolya, but close. And I am pretty sure that if he were here, we would definitely enjoy a bowl together with him appreciating this next generation of his fasoolya.
~ "In the annual Weinmann lecture, Dr. Devin Naar weaves together two overlooked stories not part of the mainstream Holocaust narrative: the devastating experiences of Sephardic Jews in Nazi-occupied Greece and the frantic efforts of their relatives in the United States to come to their aid. By tracing the deep connections maintained among Sephardic Jews in the United States and their native communities in Greece, Dr. Naar reconstructs the efforts of individuals, families, and organizations like the Sephardic Brotherhood of America to respond to the rise of Nazi Germany, the outbreak of World War II, and the ultimate destruction of Greece’s Jews. Continuing with their postwar efforts to commemorate their native communities in Greece, Sephardic Jews in America sought to show that although halfway across the globe, they remained 'close at heart.'" ~ Watch Dr. Naar's lecture @holocaustmuseum "Far from us, but close at heart: Sephardic Jews in America confront the Holocaust" ~ https://bit.ly/2UXcc5E ~ #Sephardim #Greece #WWII #Jewish #Sephardic #DevinNaar #Ladino #Rhodes #Thessaloniki #JewishHistory #Judezmo #JewishStudies #AmericanHistory

Sunday's Ladino Day at NY's Museum of Jewish History brought to life this special language of Sephardic Jews, in all its many variations. Great to be one of so many in attendance.
This is one of my favorite writers quotes I found today. I posted something a minute ago and all my words disappeared along with my hashtags because I wrote too much, as usual. Too many words become sacrilegious but what do you have to say? Simone's work is so hard to read (especially more than a few times a month) because after two paragraphs you have to put the book down and begin taking in the experience of the action she called you to take from something already within you. I think we as humans like to indeed put limits on ourselves too, such as how much we should give and in what way. We all are gifted with many ways we can serve others in our own unique fashion. We just need to pay attention to our self as much as possible to find a way to best develop and utilize our passions, in/for the service of others. There becomes a point when what you're doing is so seamlessly in #rhythm with whomever you think you are, that not a thing in the world truly bothers you and sets you back from working, by giving. Let's utilize that revelation in order to give at a higher level. Soles are hungry too! "Blessed are they who are worthy to create the Holy Name on High. This is why righteousness/tzedakah is above all other Commandments." Repost from @amitz_nasi using @RepostRegramApp - term "#Jewish" seems to be loosely based upon "#Judeans" or people from the land called "#Judea"... the former Southern Kingdom of the Hebrew or Israelite tribe of "Judah". Neither the #Ashkenazi #TurkoKhazzar Jewish people nor the #Babylonian #Sephardim #Jewishpeople have any links to the Semitic>#HebrewPhoenician>Israelites.

The actual Hebrew-Phoenician refugee survivors fled from Israel-Lebanon between the #8thcenturyBC to the 6th century BC, as their kingdoms and fortress cities fell to #Assyrian, and later, #Babylonian #invaders. Most sought sanctuary amongst their cousins in #ContinentalEurope, with many going to #Britain, #Greece, #Corsica, #Sardinia, or #Sicily after escaping, firstly, to Egypt. Many gained sanctuary at colonial outposts like #Carthage and remained there until losing it and other #MediterraneanIslands to the Romans during the "#Punicwars" (Punic is the latin word for Phoenician and Carthage was, by the time of the Punic wars in 264 BC, a #GrecoPhoenician confederation). It must be remembered that the #HebrewPhoenicians had tin mines in Cornwall, England from at least 1300 BC and copper mines in #Cyprus (the Phoenician name for England was "Cassiderites" or "Tin Island" and "Cyprus" means "#Copper"). Continued access to tin was highly important to ancient Mediterranean nations, as it was an essential ingredient in the fabrication of bronze weapons or other important utensils. An historical fact, which is emerging very strongly accompanied by indisputable archaeological and geographical evidence, is that ancient Troy was situated on the #GogMagoghills of Cambridgeshire in England and that the #TrojanWar was fought between Celtic nations, primarily over access or ownership of British tin resources. Tomorrow we wake up and it's February 1. A twelfth of the year is already completed, and it feels like a fuckton of crazy is already pumping through the veins of the world.
Aquarius season is all about exploring our idealism. What is the most beautiful world we can imagine? And why does that beautiful world have to be a fantasy?
By definition, what can be imagined can be manifested, created, birthed.
This is how I use witchcraft, and how I draw on the traditions of my ancestors, both Sephardim and Ashkenazim. I've learned one thing from them, and it's that through my choices of following my heart, I am helping co-create that more perfect world. A world with nomads, thinkers, writers, philosophers, eco-farmers, inventors, and artists. A world where people can be described by the many things they do and create, and are not defined by some job title. A world with a little more magick, a little more love, and a lot more curiosity.

Tonight my little boy was the centre of attention as we celebrated la fête des garçons and we made all his favourite foods!! The Yitro seoudat also known as the "Boy's Day", la fête des garçons, is a festival celebrated once a year by Tunisian Jews.
The feast takes place on the Thursday before reading the Yitro Parasha during which the Jewish people receive the Ten Commandments. This day of the week, known as the "fifth day", is considered beneficial to protect the boy from the evil eye. 🖐🏻🤚🏾Today, the tradition is celebrated in France 🇫🇷 in 🇮🇱 Israel and here @homecookingbyfabienne 🇬🇧 where the Tunisian diaspora lives.

Various explanations exist around the origin of this holiday which marks an important event with a meal:
- 1 -
A diphtheria epidemic has reportedly affected Tunisia and caused many deaths, including young boys, before stopping miraculously during the week of Yitro.
-2-
Chapter XVIII of Exodus recalls the meal offered by Moses in honor of his father-in-law Jethro; part of the meal would have been presented to the young sons of Moses in small dishes. It reminds me of the sharing dishes we have in restaurants in modern days!! -3-
Rabbis taught Judaism to boys from the age of five during an initiation into the Talmud Torah.
First limited to only five-year-old boys, Chief Rabbi Abraham Taïeb advises parents to extend it to include all young boys.
The meal is served that day in small plates.
We usually cook one poussin per boy and we make pastries including makrouds and yoyos. I made a giant chocolate chip cookie! The table is decorated with small candles of different colors.

On this occasion, the young boys recite for the first time the commandments of this parasha and blessings.

I have been working in the studio these last few weeks, prepping for a new project of Ladino songs with my lovely friend and awesome cellist Francesca Ter-Berg @fterberg 🌟 Our debut performance is happening next Sunday, 27 January at The Great Synagogue, CPH as part of the Copenhagen Jewish Film Festival and I'm really excited about it! Ticket link in bio 👆
This month has been a fascinating process of unearthing and selecting the songs - many of which have barely seen the light of day since the the beginning of the 20th century - experimenting with new ways to use my voice - finding a balance between the Middle Eastern influences and my own more European style 🌳
.
So Ladino is the language spoken by the Sephardim, the Jews who fled Portugal and Spain back in the 1400-1500s during the inquisition - in my family's case we went via Livorno, Italy to settle in Aleppo, where the Silveras lived until the late 19th/early 20th century and then they relocated to Europe including Manchester where my mum was raised. Her dad's side, the Turkiés, came from Damascus and Izmir. Roots!! Cant wait to record some of these songs too 💚

Ven, querida.
🌊🌊🌊
Ven querida, ven amada,
ven al borde de la mar.
Amán, amán.
Ven, te contaré mis males,
que te etas a llorar.
Amán, amán.
Huérfano de padre y de madre,
yo no tengo onde arrimar.
Amán, amán. .

En memoria al corazón español de Hernán González, que en paz descanse (pero con música). ❤️

Happy Chanukah! I love this time of year...lights and singing and warmth when it’s cold and dark outside! I always try to share some of these lesser known Chanukah songs, and this time I convinced my sleepy family to sing the version of Maoz Tsur (Rock of Ages) which I grew up with 💙🌟 Who else sings it this way?! 🖐🏼
