I have been working in the studio these last few weeks, prepping for a new project of Ladino songs with my lovely friend and awesome cellist Francesca Ter-Berg @fterberg 🌟 Our debut performance is happening next Sunday, 27 January at The Great Synagogue, CPH as part of the Copenhagen Jewish Film Festival and I'm really excited about it! Ticket link in bio 👆
This month has been a fascinating process of unearthing and selecting the songs - many of which have barely seen the light of day since the the beginning of the 20th century - experimenting with new ways to use my voice - finding a balance between the Middle Eastern influences and my own more European style 🌳
.
So Ladino is the language spoken by the Sephardim, the Jews who fled Portugal and Spain back in the 1400-1500s during the inquisition - in my family's case we went via Livorno, Italy to settle in Aleppo, where the Silveras lived until the late 19th/early 20th century and then they relocated to Europe including Manchester where my mum was raised. Her dad's side, the Turkiés, came from Damascus and Izmir. Roots!! Cant wait to record some of these songs too 💚

~ "The Ladineros are a group of community members who gather weekly at the Summit, a Jewish retirement community in Capitol Hill, to reminisce and read and chat in and about Ladino. The group's performance was a memorable highlight of the evening as they performed their rendition of Azar's "El Papagayo Djudyo" in Ladino. A slideshow behind them provided translations for the audience, and also featured some of the colorful illustrations from the book. As two members of the Ladineros narrated the scenes, six others took on character roles. Each of the Ladineros offered a lively performance; all were expressive, and appeared to truly enjoy taking on their respective character roles. A highlight was Al Shemarya's rendition of Ahot Ketana as he sat on stage with a parrot hat atop his head." ~ Asara Be-Tevet (The 10th day of the Hebrew month of Tevet) is a minor fast day which commemorates the siege on Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon, during the ninth year of Sidkiyahu's (Zedekiah's) reign as king of Judah (588 BCE). Too early to talk about my new book but it will, like my Lemberg book, also deal with Jewish history. The story might well begin right at this square, next to the Church of Sao Domingos. It was here that the good Christians of Lisbon started the 1506 massacre of the city's Jews who had previously been forced to convert to Catholicism. The two-day pogrom - in which about 2.000 men, women, and children were killed - convinced many of the survivors that they had no future in Portugal. Like the Spanish Jews, they started emigrating to more tolerant lands, mainly to the Ottoman Empire whose Sultan welcomed them. Thus began the diaspora of the Sephardic Jews and their culture, a fascinating and still quite unexplored story... #author #newbook #jewishhistory #judaism #sephardim #sephardiccommunity #diaspora #ottoman #ottomanempire #authorlife #writerlife #authorslife #writerslife #lisbon #lisboa #antisemitism #europeanhistory

~ "Remarkably, the editors of [Sha'are Tefilah] the prayer book--Salonican-born Jews who had been educated in Palestine--dedicated it to a Jewish soldier who had fallen on the battlefield defending "our beloved homeland, Greece." Written not in Greek, but rather in Judeo-Spanish, the dedication aimed to show Jews themselves that they ought to think of themselves not only as religiously Jewish and culturally Sephardi, but as Greek patriots, too. They believed that all of these allegiances could be held simultaneously. " - Devin E. Naar, Chair of the Sephardic Studies Program, University of Washington. Chanukkah, troisième soir. Rome.

Hanukkah, third evening. Rome. My window, my house, my modern family. And in the end what does the life of our father Abraham teach us? That leaving, in order to be aware and to follow our destiny, is superior to any bond of country, land, origin, law or blood. Because only by discovering ourselves and being proudly ourselves, we will live authetically and we will know that the only possible, admissible and genuine bond is only the affinity with the other free spirits of the world (our home) and of the whole humanity (our family). This is our history. This is our essence.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach to everyone from Rome!

~ "The Ladino translations of Megillat Antiochus and Ma'ase ha-Yehudit also found their way into prayer books, where they took on an added layer of political meaning in the early 20th century. The most recent of the tales are found in Kehilat Ya'akov edited in Belgrade (now the capital of Serbia), in 1904, by Rabbi Ya'akov Moshe Hai Altarats. In this prayer book, Altarats included commentaries on the liturgy and on Jewish life in general. [This copy (ST00723) was provided to the Sephardic Studies Collection courtesy of Al Maimon]. Notably, scholar Matthias Lehmann has described Altarats as one of the first Zionists to write in Ladino, and the way that Altarats explains the significance of Megillat Antiochus and Ma'ase ha-Yehudit demonstrate these nationalists aspirations."
Felice Hannukkah a tutti! Chag Chanukah sameach!

~ "Mama would read the Megila of Antiochus and the story of Judith during the festival of Hanuka. She said it was the custom of the Perahia family in Istanbul." There are two unusual features of this inscription. First, it refers to a woman, in her role as a mother, reading religious texts to her children, an act that traditionally would have been the domain of the father (a topic to address at another occasion). Second, the specific stories pertain to the holiday of Hanukkah. Unlike other Jewish holidays such as Purim, Passover and Shavuot, there is no universally accepted megillah or Jewish liturgical text for Hanukkah. ~ "The genre of folktales will be the focus of Seattle's sixth annual International Ladino Day on December 5 at the University of Washington. Ladino Day, instituted by the National Authority for Ladino, in Jerusalem, to celebrate and raise awareness of the endangered language, has become a hallmark of the UW Sephardic Studies Program. Consistently drawing hundreds of audience members, Ladino Day has featured performances by the Ladineros -- a group of Seattle-based Ladino speakers that meets weekly -- alongside readings, lectures, and music. This year, French Sephardic activist and publisher François Azar will headline." - Dr. Hannah Pressman

~ "For Sephardic Jewish immigrants in America--both men and women--Thanksgiving provided them with the opportunity to express both their deep sense of national pride and their gratitude to the freedoms they obtained in their new country. In Seattle this was a result of their own initiative and their relationship with the Reform Jewish congregation, which took the newcomers under its wing, and their own historical precedents in the Ottoman Empire." - Ty Alhadeff

~ "In the tense context of World War II, Thanksgiving took on an additional layer of patriotic symbolism. In 1944, as reported in the Jewish Transcript, both Ezra Bessaroth and Sephardic Bikur Holim held Thanksgiving services and invited local judges and politicians to deliver speeches." ~ "François Azar, the featured guest at Seattle's upcoming Ladino Day celebration, came to the study of Ladino as an adult. Now he is leading the French resurgence of interest in Sephardic culture with projects spanning music and the arts, publishing, language instruction, children's programs, and more. The cause that is perhaps dearest to his heart, Ladino folktales, will be the focus of the Ladino Day event taking place on December 5th at the University of Washington and organized under the auspices of the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies and it's Sephardic Studies Program."
