Why do I train?
First let me tell you why I used to train

To look better
To lose body fat
To build a flat stomach and get as close as possible to a six pack as possible
To look better to other people
To stay skinny and stay in shape
When I started, those were my reasons for going to the gym. Do you see any familiarity with those reasons? None of them are all that positive, and some reasons where centered around the opinions of other people. These reasons are not sustainable for the long term. Training becomes more of a chore.
Now I train for a completely different reasons.
First, to get stronger
Because it’s enjoyable
To challenge myself and see what I’m capable of
To test out different methods of training to see what works best for me and my clients
To maintain my health as I get older (I’m old 😭)
To keep myself in shape so I can stay active with my kids, walking, swimming, climbing trees, play centres, skiing once a year
My reasons for training now are much more positive and completely different from my reasons for training when I started. Yes, looking good is a wonderful thing, but for me it is more of a side effect from training for strength. I do want to look good, but it’s not my primary goal, it’s just an added benefit from training hard and eating well
This journey doesn’t end either. Even once I reach a specific goal hitting a new PB on the deadlift, for example, I’ll just set a new one and keep going. This journey never ends, even though my goals have change over time.

Now your reasons for training may be completed different from me. Some people train because they want to look good naked, plain and simple. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that if it keeps you going to the gym consistently, this is just me, and how my mindset has changed over time. 😃

Trainierst du primär einbeinig?

In aller Regel ist bei jeder Bewegung nur ein Bein auf dem Boden, sodass wir die Fähigkeit benötigen uns auf einem Bein stabilisieren zu können. Durch Übungen wie herkömmliche Kniebeuge und Kreuzheben, wird diese Fähigkeit großteils vernachlässigt. •
Ich selber konnte durch die Umstellung auf primär einbeiniges Training, meine Kniebeschwerden beseitigen und meine Stabilität verbessern.

Starte erst mit Kniebeugen im Ausfallschritt, gehe dann über zu einbeinigen Kniebeugen mit erhöhtem hinteren Fuß, bevor du zu „wirklichen“ einbeinigen Kniebeugen übergehst.

TRAINING PROGRESSION ISN’T ALWAYS LINEAR

4 weeks off from performing any barbell exercises (due to not training for 12 days whilst travelling, then only have access to dumbbells & machines during the second half of my travels), and this is the result. The heaviest 60kg has felt on my back in a very long time 😂

Breathing was average
Bar path was seriously average.
Weight felt heavier than it has in many months.

Am I worried? Not at all.

I didn’t train as I ‘usually’ would for 4 weeks, so I can’t expect to simply return to where I left off — it just doesn’t work like that.

Beyond constantly fluctuating factors, such as stress, sleep, nutrition and recovery, SPECIFICITY and time away from SPECIFIC training hinders progress in that area too.

If you’ve taken some time off your regular training, don’t expect to pick up where you’ve left off, because it just doesn’t work like that 😂. If not practiced, strength in specific movements can be lost very quickly. HOWEVER, it is regained quickly too. Work at what you would ‘usually’ perceive to be about an RPE 7-7.5 for the first week, make sure you leave reps in reserve, slowly increase the following week, and your strength will be regained in not long at all. 💪🏻

But it's changing how you squat.
What do I mean by this?
Are you hitting the gym and doing the same routine over and over? Are you using the same tempo day in day out? Are you doing any accessory exercises in workouts to strength all those muscle groups?
In order to change and improve we have to #challenge our bodies...simply changing the tempo of your exercise can make it a WHOLE lot harder 😅

Sooooo BOTTOM PAUSES...
.
So possibly like yourself, I hit a plateau and realised I needed to change something if I wanted the outcome to change.
I started to lower my #weight (big bollocks over here always wanting to try hit PBs 🤣) and focused on slower eccentric reps and bottom pauses.
So when I'm at the bottom of my squat I hold for 2s and then drive back up.
This is super great (and important) to keep that strong core working.

I always 'reset' and the top of my squats...so I drive up out of my squat...take a deep breathe...tighten my core...and then go again...breathing out of the effort phase.

Why are some athletes comfortable squatting with their toes relatively straight forward, while others need to turn them out to the side? In the same way why do some athletes squat better with a narrow stance, while others prefer a relatively wider stance? A lot of it comes down to anatomy.📝

You see the anatomy text books would tell us that most of our hips have a socket that opens up at a slight angle forward – however, upwards of 40% of people have sockets that open more forward or more flat to the side✅
.
Also, if we look at the femur bone, it usually attaches at a small angle to the pelvis. However some have a femur that is twisted inward or outwards✅
.
To test to see if you have this “different” kind of anatomy, start by lying on your stomach. Have a friend take their hand and feel for the lateral bony part of your femur that sticks out. While rotating the foot in and out, stop the foot at the point this bone is most lateral into your hand. Most people will end with the foot slightly out to the side(around 8-15 degrees)🥊

If your foot ended up way to the outside or even back towards the body, it means you don’t have “textbook” anatomy and it is normal for your squat stance to look a little different (this would be anteversion or retroversion)✅
